Salentein Reserve Malbec: Multi Award Winner inclding ’10 Gold Decanter! Wine Woman Pick

Salentein Reserve Malbec

Price: ¥259

If you wish to know anything at all about Malbec know that it is Argentina’s crowning gloryclose black grapes , in wine terms. From Cahors in France, where it makes often tannic, rustic and unyielding wines requiring food, the grape in the Argentine has undergone a remarkable transformation under local conditions and bears little resemblance.

Deep purple, intense wine, with aromas of distinctive personality and varietal typicity, notably blackberries, and the floral scents of violets and vanilla. A sweet start of mouth, followed by an ample and intense feel in the mid palate, with a silky and rounded tannin texture. It stands out for its fruity character and the crispiness of its well-balanced acidity. A long and lingering finish, with the presence of sweet and fresh wooden flavours.

Steak and red wineFood Matching: Perfect with grilled and roast meat.

August 2012: Sampled at home with a Sirloin Steak au Poivre, sauté potatoes and 2 steamed vegetables. Sheer brilliance. I had opened it the night before to pit it against a cheaper Cabernet-Malbec blend I was trying out as a possible sub-100RMB wine for our portfolio. Both were truly enjoyable at their respective price points but the quality gap was astounding.

Fruit, warmth and power meet head on with a luxurious mouth-feel and satisfying long, refreshing palate.
