De Bortoli have done it again. And they keep doing it.

They have the sweet-fruit-oak-tannic balance to perfection and not simply for a wine in this price-point. I was staggered that they can do this so effectively, time after time when I taste so much disappointment from time to time in higher priced wines. My hats go off to De Bortoli again. That’s 2 silver and a bronze from the range we stock. Not bad. They are fast on their way to getting a winery of the year award from the likes of James Halliday.

Appearance: Vibrant purple, deep crimson.

Aroma: Lifted plum and spice.

Taste: Fresh fruit, berry and toasty vanillin oak. Soft, rounded tannins with good length.

I just wish they made the labels a bit, er, more elegant.

Note: We now understand that the De Bortoli Sacred Hill Range is the Family Selection in different packaging. So, for example,  the DB Sacred Hill Chardonnay and DB Family Selection Chardonnay are the same wine. The two are inter-changeable: One intended for the retail market one for the on-trade. Hint: the D.B.F.S. packaging has more elegant labelling.

Nov 2011: The wine is currently a silver and bronze medal winner at several wine competitions. I sampled this on Sunday night after a roast dinner. I drank the entire bottle. That’s not normal for me, and others feel the same way too.

September 2015: OMG. We just emptied 2 bottles. That’s no great feat, you might think: I know, but we have hundreds of wines to choose from, so yes it’s no mean feat for this wine to keep us so enthralled everything else was kept on the shelves. Mrs. Wine Man ecstatic” 17.5pts
