Having tasted this for the first time in December ’11, it got onto our website without hesitation. It is staggeringly good for very little cost.

Vivid ruby colour. Exquisite aroma of forest berries and spices on a rich background of leather and liquorice. Palate characterised by sweet healthy tannins from the fruit and the vegetal nuances typical of this variety.

It’s even better after being open a while; unusually so, for a wine of such a low price point.

It has been described as ‘the best wine’ we sell according to the price/quality ratio. It has also been described as the best sub RMB100 100% Cabernet wine we sell.

August 2012: Now our top selling red, spotted Emblema Cab on a Chinese website (March 2012) for ¥98 a bottle, brilliantly on ‘offer’, down from ¥135; and in a shop for ¥110 (November 2012). Amazing nerve, both.

September 2012: I have just tonight enjoyed a 2009 I had kept cellared. The wine is so soft. What a supple wine. So fresh and so good after a year long rest too. Versatility and ‘Silky smooth’ (says The Zohan).

January 2013: Every day red wine of choice at the moment.

March 2014: Sampled the 2010; a vintage unusually sealed under screw-cap. After enjoying for its own flavours, I blended the wine 40:60 with a south African Mannenberg Shiraz (PDF only) and then the 30:70 with Callia Alta Shiraz Malbec from Argentina. The higher notes nuances of this fresh Cabernet added pleasant dimension to both of those already lovely wines. Hard to believe that for 2 years we have managed to supply this wine at ¥80 when it is still sold retail for ¥135+.

A fantastic wine to buy a case of and dip into over the course of a year or 2, to witness its evolution without any of the expense attached to wines may times the price. At the very least, if you find out you are leaving SH with half case still to drink it transforms easily into a welcome and inexpensive party wine.
