Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chateau Clerc Milon: Pauillac (5th Growth): Wine Woman Pick

B.P.Rothschild Chateau Clerc Milon

Price: ¥1,753

Clerc Millon is an over-achiever of a chateau, who, under the patronage of the Rothschilds, has seen a rebirth, punching well above its classification as a fifth growth, consistently matching levels of quality from fourth and third growth producers. This is a wine of distinction for a special occasion made from Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Merlot 41%, Cabernet Franc 4%, Petit Verdot 1%, Carmenère 1%.

Year: 2006/09 There is a fine, ruby colour. Though not yet fully open, the nose displays notes of blackberry and raspberry mingled with a suggestion of liquorice and vanilla. Give it some air (decant) or a good long breathe. The attack reveals a fine, rich structure of considerable character. The tannins are gentler now; elegant (and will integrate gate further with continued bottle time), supporting clearly defined but expressively complex oaky flavours of toast, coconut and cigar. The long, lingering and very harmonious finish underlines the character of a wine which is full of promise but needs a little more time to reach maturity. Then prices will spike, as demand explodes.

Reviews and Scores:

Château Clerc-Milon (Pauillac) 2009: A full-on, stolid but at least expressive layer of fruit on the nose, which at least inspires some confidence. A lovely supple integration on the palate though, as there is a balanced weight of fruit together with well-covered, ripe and almost imperceptible tannins and a gentle but fresh acidity. The finish is very savoury and only lightly structured, but the flavours of olive and cranberry with its slightly bitter, mouth-watering bite certainly bring some pleasure. A very good effort.  18/20 (October 2011)from ‘the wine doctor’.

Food Matching: This wine will perfectly accompany grilled red meat or abalone in tasty sauce but will also enhance mushroom flavours nicely.
