Baron De Ley Reserva Rioja: Bronze MEDAL 2014

Baron De Ley Reserva Rioja

Old style, traditional Rioja from the land of ‘fantastic values and wonderful cellaring’. A deep and characterful red-black wine. Crushed black fruits on the nose, with plenty of the hoped-for soot, tar, and cigar smoke complexity. Medium to full bodied on the palate, with crushed blackberry and blueberry flavours. Baron de Ley Rioja Blanco: New Wine

Baron de Ley Rioja Blanco

Check out this write-up. So funny. I had to leave it, despite the fact that I rather like white Rioja. Light Yellow colour with a green hue. Clean and bright. Amazingly attractive grass and dill nose, showing a uniqueness of Rioja whites. Tastes a good harmony of acidity and alcohol with a excellent structure. It’s a brilliant apertif. Pairs with Roast fish or seafood.

Baron de Ley Rioja Rosado Rosé: New Wine

Baron de Ley Rioja Rosado Rosé

This is a great find. We are very happy to have introduced this to a couple of rosé fans, who in turn spread the word amongst their friends and in the case of a club; their members. Of course, in Spain the term for rosé is rosado. This is a very light rosé Rioja, often new to many people who associate Rioja with fruity red, full bodied, easy-drinking wines. Easily drinkable on its own, it would work well alongside light canapés or desserts.

Bodegas Bilbainas Vina Pomal Rioja Crianza

Lovely example of a tasty Spanish Rioja with nice balancing acidity. Dark, intoxicating hues and aromas hit you with a strong attack of integrated oak and fruit. This 100% Tempranillo Rioja Crianza has spent over one year in oak, has plenty of acidity, which rounds off the fruit and oak, nicely.

Camino De Castilla Ribera Del Duero Crianza (Tempranillo): Wine Man Pick

November 3, 2011
Camino De Castilla Ribera Del Duero (Tempranillo)

A Spanish region known for very expensive wines has thrown up an absolute gem at a real bargain. Think Rioja with a similar fruit intensity, just a little less oak but some good bottle age. Also, a little cheaper than our Pomal Rioja crianza. Best if served with something hot and well flavoured like grilled lamb cutlets with mint and thyme. Benefits too, from breathing. Even better on day 2 also.

Castillo De Manza La Mancha Tempranillo: Wine Man Pick

Castillo De Manza La Mancha Tempranillo

This low priced Spanish bargain is a dark purple red with an attractive violet tone. There’s a clean aroma of ripe fruits; strawberry and raspberry and some pervading herbal notes. On the palate it is smooth and full bodied with soft tannins. There is something enigmatic about Castillo de Manza. For me, it resembles a French wine; not a Spanish…

Spanish WINTER Sale: Closed

Thumbnail image for Spanish WINTER Sale: Closed

Spanish regions have amazingly won Wine Region of the World twice in the last 2 years, at Snooth.com in 2011 with Rioja then at Wine Enthusiast Magazine with Ribera Del Duero in 2012. That’s some feat. Spain remains excellent value, & unlike some other countries (we could mention) is seldom prone to being counterfeited, smuggled or dumped. So it’s safer. Remember also, that Spanish wine laws mean the producers age the wines for us: to perfection under optimum conditions in their cellars. Lots to get excited about.

Torres Fransola (Penedes- Sauvignon Blanc): Wine Man Pick: New Wine

March 1, 2015
Torres Fransola White Penedes

Stunning. It’s not often that one gets to sample a Sauvignon Blanc that’s had some time in tanks maturing over it’s lees (the yeasty sediment by product of fermentation). I first took this to an event we ran in March 2012. It blew everyone in attendance away. Intense aroma of fruit and spices over a background of new oak. Fresh and lush on the palate, it’s very big with the aroma’s well-defined fruit notes (vine peach and summer melon), complemented by hints of vanilla and toast acquired during the lees ageing.

Big wine: Grans Muralles, cultivated since the 13th century, is one of the TORRES family’s most symbolic vineyards. These Catalan vines near extinction have been replanted in historic lands since 1984 resulting in the first wine made from indigenous Catalan varieties in Spain. A veritable work of art! Aged in French Nevers and Allier barrels, these labels show intense deep red colour with purple reflections. Aroma of exotic and profound complexity showing great density, incredibly rich body and structure.
